Starling is a basic vanilla shortie sock worked cuff to toe. It features a short row heel, along with an option contrasting color cuff and toe.

Skills to know: German twisted cast on, work in the round, knit, purl, German short rows/short row heel, increase, decrease, Kitchener stitch

You’ll need: US size 1 (2.25mm) knitting needles (or size needed to obtain gauge) 9” circulars plus a separate set of circulars for the heel, DPNs or longer cable for magic loop, stitch markers, and a tapestry needle. Sock blockers and/or mats are helpful but not necessary.
- Required yardage will vary depending on your gauge and desired length of leg and foot, but one 100-gram skein of yarn should be plenty for one pair. One 20-gram mini skein will be plenty for the contrasting color cuff/toe. The pattern is written for working with 9” circular needles, but could be worked with DPNs or magic loop if you prefer.

Notes on sizing:
This pattern is written for 4 sizes, ranging from 6-9 in/15.5-23 cm finished sock foot circumference. It is recommended to choose a size that gives about .5-1 in/1.5-2.5 cm negative ease for a snug but comfortable fit. The sample size 2 shows approx. 1 in/2.5 cm negative ease. Let me know if you have any questions about sizing!
Pattern gauge:
4”/10 cm = 32 sts/34 rounds in stockinette st
Using US size 1 (2.25mm) needles, worked in the round.
Note: All measurements are approximate and taken after blocking. Inches are rounded to the nearest 0.25 in and centimeters to the nearest 0.5 cm.
